#God’s Promises

(from Streams of Living Water for a Thirsty Soul)

“For in [Jesus] every one of God’s promises is a ‘Yes.’  For this reason it is through him that we say the ‘Amen,’ to the glory of God.”  2 Corinthians 1:20 (NRSV)

It’s hard to believe and to have faith when we’re going through the wilderness.  Our low and desperate feelings cause our thoughts to dwell on the negative. Feelings are important and we need to face them and deal with them, but we must remember they are transient. Feelings can be changed by the weather, the actions or words of another person, and even by what we ourselves do or don’t do. If we eat too much or the wrong foods, get insufficient exercise, or miss sleep, our feelings will be affected. Therefore, we can’t depend on our feelings to accurately guide our thoughts.

Just the opposite is true of God’s promises. They never change. They’re always the same no matter what.  We can depend on them. The verse in 2 Corinthians says in Jesus every one of God’s promises is a “yes.” That means they are true, and God through Jesus keeps every promise in His Word. Therefore, we can agree and say “Amen” (so let it be), even though our feelings say differently.

When we’re feeling low, we need to focus our minds on—and persist in believing—the promises in God’s Word, instead of believing only what our feelings tell us.

PRAYER: O God, help me to concentrate on and believe Your never-changing promises, rather than letting my feelings rule my thoughts and actions.
