#Abundant Life

(from Streams of Living Water for a Thirsty Soul)

“…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

Jesus came to give us abundant life. But when we’re in the wilderness, we don’t feel life is abundant.

What is the abundant life Jesus came to give? Is it a life free of problems, hard times, temptations, and sorrow? Surely not, since Acts 14:22 says, “we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.” Jesus, Himself, said, “In the world ye shall have tribulation” (John 16:33).

The abundant life is, first of all, being free from condemnation—the freedom we have in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:1-2). The abundant life is Jesus at the right hand of God interceding for us (v.34) and our knowing nothing can separate us from God’s love (vv.35-39).

The abundant life is Jesus with us to the end of the world (Matthew 28:20) and God’s promise to never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). The abundant life is having the assurance “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

The abundant life is having the power of the Holy Spirit, who makes us to abound in hope (Romans 15:13). That “hope is an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast” (Hebrews 6:19).

No, the abundant life is not freedom from hard times, but it is the power of God in us enabling us to be “troubled on every side, yet not distressed…perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:7-9).

PRAYER: Thank You, God, for the abundant life in Christ Jesus. I believe I have that life even if I don’t feel it right now.
